Boundless, the zero-knowledge network and marketplace developed by RISC Zero, has launched a cross-chain verification system that allows Bitcoin to be used as a verification and payment layer for high-computation ZK proofs. In the initial phase, the system will connect Ethereum mainnet and Base Layer 2 to Bitcoin before expanding to other chains.

Boundless’s solution combines BitVM and the project’s own ZK network, enabling users to verify and permanently commit ZK proofs on Bitcoin without modifying the core protocol. According to CEO Shiv Shankar, the goal is not to turn Bitcoin into Ethereum, but to ensure Ethereum-like tasks are secured and settled by Bitcoin.

The new system also leverages Citrea, a native ZK rollup on Bitcoin, reflecting the trend of Bitcoin gradually expanding its role from store of value to an independent verification layer for other blockchain ecosystems. Boundless states it will continue to support more chains, aiming to turn Bitcoin into a shared security layer for the entire blockchain ecosystem.
