zkSync stirred things up: ZK is abandoned!

Matter Labs, the company that developed the ZkSync Ethereum layer-2, has announced that it has abandoned all attempts to trademark the term “ZK” following a backlash from “ZK” researchers

Matter Labs said that the discussions regarding the trademark application have come to a single truth: ‘It would be impossible to reach an agreement among a group of people,’ the company wrote in its announcement.

Authorized names made surprising comments about zkSync

After Matter Labs announced its intention to trademark the term “ZK”, several representatives of the leading ZK projects attended, including Shafi Goldwasser and Silvio Micali, Polygon co-founders Sandeep Nailwal and Brendan Farmer, and Eli Ben.

Part of the statement reads: ‘ZK should remain public property. It should not be a company’s trademark; it should be accessible to everyone.’ ‘If the company does this, it will have separated itself from the community it claims to be a part of.’

The debate about ZkSync’s trademark application arose when the protocol planned an airdrop expected to take place in mid-June. The request to use the ZK code led to a disagreement with Polyhedra, who preferred to use the ZKJ code for their own token list.

According to The Block’s data, ZkSync generally has the highest seven-day moving transaction average among all ZK-rollup Layer 2 Ethereum networks. Competitor Linea halted its network after attacks on Velocore, a decentralized exchange built on Linea, as well as other chains.
