Four years ago, Beeple made $69 million from NFTs, and he’s still making money now.

After selling an NFT for a record-breaking $69 million, Beeple has remained active in the NFT space. At this year’s Art Basel, he launched the Regular Animals series as a free giveaway. Now, individual pieces from the collection are trading for over 10 ETH each, with a total value nearing $10 million.

Beeple, the man who sold a single NFT for $69 million, has always been seen as a symbol of the NFT golden era. Although the NFT boom has faded, Beeple and his team have remained highly active in the NFT community. At this year’s Art Basel, he brought a new “golden dog” to the cooling NFT market—Regular Animals.

Yesterday, several Regular Animals pieces sold for over 10 ETH (about $35,000) each on OpenSea. These works were originally given away for free at Art Basel, with a total of 256 pieces. At current prices, Beeple gave away nearly $10 million worth of NFTs at Art Basel.

Beeple and his team’s project for this year’s Art Basel is Regular Animals. This is a set of robotic dogs, as shown in the image below. They look a bit eerie because the robot dogs have human faces, all modeled after famous people, such as Elon Musk, Andy Warhol, Mark Zuckerberg, Picasso, and even Beeple himself.

Of course, it’s not just about the eerie visual effect. These robot dogs use cameras in their heads to observe their surroundings and employ an evolving visual algorithm logic to create art.

The celebrities portrayed by these robot dogs were not chosen at random. The reason for choosing these figures is because they have influenced how humanity views the world, whether through algorithms, art, or politics. As humans, we observe the world through these perspectives, and so do these robot dogs. At Art Basel, these robot dogs and humans observed each other, and each observed moment became the artistic creation of these robot dogs, which also serve as their autobiographies.

Interestingly, there is also a physical version of Regular Animals, with 1,024 pieces in the set. On eBay, some have already been listed for sale at a fixed price of $6,500. The market is valuing the NFTs much more highly than the physical artworks, reminiscent of Damien Hirst’s “The Currency” series from a few years ago, which forced holders to choose between the physical piece and the NFT.

Before his huge NFT success, Beeple had been creating art every day since 2007, but had never sold a piece for more than $100. After gaining both fame and fortune, Beeple didn’t splurge like some artists or crypto project founders. He acquired a studio/gallery of about 460 square meters and built a team of dozens of 3D artists, engineers, and researchers (including former Boeing engineers), invited former Castello di Rivoli Contemporary Art Museum director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev as an advisor, and has continuously exhibited in art shows around the world while creating new works.

Beeple’s robotic dog exhibition has attracted attention in the crypto world due to its price, and has also been covered by traditional media like the Wall Street Journal.
