I noticed that the Altcoin Season Index (Altcoin Season Index) from CoinMarketCap is still at 25, which clearly indicates one thing – Bitcoin is currently dominating the market almost entirely. This 25 reflects that only a small portion of the top 100 coins outperform Bitcoin over the last 90 days, far from the 75 needed to declare a true altcoin season.
The way the index is calculated is simple but effective – it compares the performance of the top 100 coins (excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens) against Bitcoin over the same period. If 75% or more outperform, the index reaches 100 and a true altcoin season begins. But currently, we are far from that.
What’s interesting is that historically, these periods of Bitcoin dominance often precede massive rises in altcoins. In 2020, we saw the index low before it jumped above 75 in early 2021 – and that was a legendary period for altcoins. It seems that capital first concentrates in Bitcoin when markets are uncertain, then gradually shifts to higher-risk options.
The factors driving this dynamic are multiple – institutional adoption through Bitcoin funds directs conservative capital initially toward BTC, and broader economic conditions like interest rate expectations influence Bitcoin as “digital gold” before spilling over into altcoins. Some technical developments may create limited performance, but they are not enough to trigger a broad seasonal shift.
Practically speaking, reading 25 on the altcoin season index doesn’t necessarily mean bad news for altcoin investors. This could be a good period for strategic accumulation of fundamentally strong coins with active development. Analysts confirm that these phases offer an opportunity to distinguish serious projects from tokens that only ride volatile waves.
Altcoins that succeed during this period usually have strong independent catalysts – major network upgrades or partnership announcements – or low correlation with Bitcoin. Sectors like distributed physical networks sometimes perform independently. This strong performance gives early signals about sectors that may lead the next cycle.
Transitioning from Bitcoin season to altcoin season rarely happens suddenly. It usually follows a pattern – Bitcoin experiences a significant rally, attracting general attention, then as prices stabilize, investors start seeking higher returns in altcoins. This cyclical capital movement ultimately pushes the index above 75.
The index itself is lagging – it confirms an existing trend rather than predicting new beginnings. But with fundamental analysis and on-chain data, it provides a clear picture of the current market phase – a period of focus and accumulation before the next move.
