Pioneer of digital money Laszlo Hanyecz recently revealed unexpected details about one of the most famous deals in blockchain history in an interview. Laszlo Hanyecz’s figure is closely associated with the rise of practical Bitcoin usage, but the true scale of his early transactions turned out to be much larger than commonly believed in the community.

The First Cryptocurrency Purchase: Not Just Pizza

On May 22, 2010, an event occurred that forever changed the perception of digital assets. On that day, Laszlo Hanyecz made the first documented purchase of goods with Bitcoin – two pizzas for 10,000 BTC. Today, this date is celebrated as “Bitcoin Pizza Day,” reminding the community of the very beginning of the digital payment era.

However, Laszlo Hanyecz clarified that the pizza costing 10,000 Bitcoin was not the total amount he spent in those early days. According to him, he mined about 100,000 BTC and spent half of that on various goods and services, including pizza. “I probably earned a few thousand dollars from all this. It was enough to build a new computer,” the cryptocurrency pioneer said.

From Bitcoin Mining to Technical Achievements: Porting to MacOS

Laszlo Hanyecz himself notes that buying pizza is far from the most significant event in his history of interacting with Bitcoin. Much more important to him was his contribution to the network’s technical infrastructure – porting Satoshi Nakamoto’s source code from Windows to MacOS.

“I didn’t hold back and was willing to overpay to help develop the ecosystem,” Hanyecz added. Satoshi Nakamoto initially created Bitcoin on Windows and approached him to adapt the software for Mac users. “He didn’t know how to compile for Mac. I did that, and the source code was released to the network under my authorship,” Laszlo Hanyecz explained.

This technical solution significantly expanded Bitcoin’s user base by making it accessible to Apple computer owners. Hanyecz’s contribution to cross-platform compatibility was no less important than the first payment, which the cryptocurrency community remembers him for.

Legacy in Blockchain History

The current BTC price is $71,250 with a daily increase of +4.40%. Laszlo Hanyecz’s story serves as a reminder that in the early days of cryptocurrencies, value was determined not so much by monetary metrics but by faith in the technology and willingness to contribute to its development. His blockchain address remains a testament to an era when Bitcoin transitioned from a theoretical concept to practical reality.
