Greenland-U.S. negotiations show limited progress, as diplomatic talks involving Foreign Minister Anita reveal
It has become clear during diplomatic talks in February that there has been no expected progress in negotiations between Greenland and the United States. At the meeting attended by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, the Greenland Foreign Minister expressed frank opinions.
Remarks at the Canadian Consulate Opening Ceremony and Minister Anand’s Role
On February 6, a ceremony was held in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, to officially inaugurate the Canadian consulate. Attending were Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Greenland Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who held a joint press conference.
Minister Anand’s presence symbolized diplomatic cooperation in the North American region. During the conference, candid exchanges took place regarding the status of negotiations with the United States.
Improvements Compared to a Month Ago and Remaining Challenges
Foreign Minister Motzfeldt assessed that the current situation has improved compared to a month ago. She stated that the main reason for this improvement is the establishment of direct diplomatic channels with the United States. However, she also acknowledged that substantive negotiations regarding Greenland have not yet yielded desirable results.
Outlook Suggesting Prolonged Negotiations
Minister Motzfeldt commented, “There is still a long way to go, so it is premature to judge the results at this stage.” This statement suggests that negotiations with the United States remain at a merely diplomatic contact stage, and substantial agreement formation will require considerable time.
According to Jin10 reports, despite the initiation of diplomatic dialogue, there is a growing view that concrete progress is limited. The development of future negotiations continues to be closely watched.
