5. Overview of the Three Major US Stock Exchanges
The biggest difference between US and Taiwanese stocks is that Taiwanese stocks are traded on a single exchange, while the US has three major exchanges operating independently, with slight differences in opening hours and prices.
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
The NYSE is the world’s largest stock exchange by total market capitalization of listed securities, with over 3,500 listed stocks. It primarily uses electronic trading but still maintains a significant floor trading presence, especially in price setting and large institutional trades.
NASDAQ
NASDAQ was the world’s first electronic securities market, employing fully electronic trading. Investors can trade via phone or internet directly. Many high-tech giants like Microsoft and Apple are listed on NASDAQ.
AMEX (NYSE American)
The American Stock Exchange is the third-largest US trading market, similar in trading mode to NYSE. It mainly lists small- and mid-cap companies and is the only exchange that trades stocks, futures, and derivatives simultaneously. Acquired by NYSE in 2008, it was renamed NYSE American.
