Parity Technologies, the developer behind the Polkadot (DOT) protocol, has revealed plans to discontinue the parachain auction system that has supported the network’s core infrastructure. This initiative was announced by Pierre Overholt, head of the company’s engineering division, and is part of the evolution strategy for the next-generation protocol called Polkadot V2.

Transition to Next-Generation Mechanisms

Replacing the traditional parachain auction method, new operational frameworks such as Agile Coretime or Bulk Coretime are scheduled to be introduced. These mechanisms are still in the detailed design phase but are expected to provide a more user-friendly interface for Polkadot network participants.

According to Overholt, this change primarily aims to improve user experience and will be implemented gradually during the protocol upgrade process.

Ecosystem Impact

The introduction of a new core time allocation mechanism will bring several significant benefits to Polkadot. One is the reliable bridging functionality with Ethereum, and another is the strengthening of direct integration with Kusama, the canary network.

Successful examples like Moonbeam Network and Astar Network, built through parachain auctions, suggest that this mechanism is an effective means of enhancing sidechains. The community has previously unified in protocol support activities for parachain integration and has received native token rewards for contributions after the network went live.

Over the next six months, the protocol roadmap will focus on implementing features based on the specifications of Agile Coretime. Improving developer experience is a top priority, with efforts underway to develop tools utilizing the recommended Polkadot API.
