The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has carried out a series of historic interest rate hikes since 2024, ending decades of negative interest rate policies.
History of the interest rate hikes:
- March 2024: BOJ implements its first rate hike in 17 years, officially ending the prolonged negative interest rate policy. The policy rate is raised from -0.1% to around 0% - 0.1%.
- July 2024: BOJ continues with its second rate hike, bringing the benchmark rate to about 0.25%.
- January 2025: The policy rate is increased from 0.25% to 0.5%, the highest in about 17 years.
- December 2025 (expected): Market and street sources forecast that BOJ will continue to raise interest rates to 0.75% at the policy meeting scheduled for December 18-19, 2025.
Meanwhile, as of (the end of 2025), Japan holds the largest amount of U.S. Treasury bonds, totaling (1.1893 trillion USD), followed by the United Kingdom and China.
