AWS officially launches "Agent-based Development"... AI agents will replace coding work

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is comprehensively expanding its “agentic development” strategy, signaling a paradigm shift in how artificial intelligence (AI) applications are built and used. This move aims to create a cloud development environment where anyone can easily create and use automated AI agents, thereby accelerating business innovation for enterprises.

Marc Brooker, Vice President of AWS’s Agentic AI division, recently announced this plan at the “AWS re:Invent 2025” event in Las Vegas. He stated, “Even developers with limited coding skills can now easily create agents on their laptops,” emphasizing, “We consider this accessibility a core pillar of the AWS platform strategy.”

Brooker explained that in traditional software development paradigms, developers must technically interpret and implement user requirements one by one. Now, AI-based agents can autonomously handle the entire process from goal setting and decision-making to information gathering. This signals the rise of a new development approach where users simply issue instructions and review results.

The core tools enabling this possibility are the “Strands” software development kit (SDK) and the “Kiro” integrated development environment (IDE). With these, developers can implement agents with simple task instructions and deploy them to the AWS cloud environment. The tools are designed to fully meet enterprise requirements for security, governance, and scalability.

The underlying infrastructure for running agents, “AgentCore,” has also been released. It provides functionality that combines elements of the existing serverless service “Lambda” and virtual machine EC2, and can connect various AWS services and external solutions in a secure execution environment. Brooker emphasized, “AgentCore will become the cornerstone of AI-based automation innovation within the AWS ecosystem.”

Some observers believe that the widespread adoption of agentic development could significantly reshape trends in the cloud industry in the long run. Analyzing the shift from code-centric to goal-centric development, this approach is expected to have an impact comparable to the evolution toward serverless computing.

Brooker stated, “We are making the development process increasingly abstract,” adding, “In the future, we will enter an era where developers are not writing ‘code’ but designing ‘outcomes’.”

AWS’s initiative is seen as a turning point that provides more opportunities for innovative enterprises. Especially in the early AI application market, it significantly lowers the barrier to entry, enabling small developers and startups to create competitive agents—an achievement of great significance. This strategy of technological democratization and expansion is attracting significant attention as a tangible example of the cloud future AWS envisions.
