The most devastating collapse in cryptocurrency history is about to become dramatic. On March 17, Netflix announced the official launch of an 8-episode limited series, “The Altruists,” based on the fall of FTX and the inside story of Alameda Research.

The series title references Sam Bankman-Fried’s advocacy of “Effective Altruism,” which was also the core argument behind his idealized image at the time.

Dream Cast: Recreating “Generation Z Bonnie and Clyde”

The biggest highlight is the casting of the two leads. Julia Garner, who has swept awards with her performances in “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna,” will play Caroline Ellison, former CEO of Alameda Research. Anthony Boyle, recently acclaimed for “Masters of the Air,” will portray SBF, once hailed as the “golden boy” of crypto.

The production team describes these two as “Generation Z’s Bonnie and Clyde.” The series will trace how they evolved from ambitious, high-IQ idealists trying to reshape the financial world into defendants accused of stealing $8 billion from customers, ultimately ending up behind bars.

Award-Winning Team: Produced by Obama’s Production Company

The team behind “The Altruists” is equally impressive. The series will be executive produced and written by Graham Moore (“The Imitation Game”) and Jacqueline Hoyt. Moore told the media:

“Over the past three years, Sam and Caroline’s story has been my obsession.”

Additionally, the series is developed in partnership with Higher Ground Productions, founded by former U.S. President Barack and Michelle Obama, in collaboration with Netflix. It is inspired by in-depth investigative reporting from New York Magazine. Other cast members include:

  • Alex Lawther as Sam Trabucco
  • Matt Rife as Ryan Salame
  • Jennifer Grey as Caroline’s mother, Sarah Fisher Ellison
  • Paul Reiser as SBF’s father, Joe Bankman
  • Terry Chen as Binance founder CZ

The Trend of Crypto on the Big Screen

While the release date has not yet been announced, the launch of “The Altruists” reflects mainstream entertainment’s strong interest in cryptocurrency themes. As SBF faces a 25-year sentence and Caroline Ellison becomes a key witness, dramatizing the intertwining of technology, ideals, desire, and power, this series is expected to explore the darker sides of these forces.
