Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov recently announced on Telegram that the TON blockchain has undergone a significant system upgrade. The most prominent result of this update is a dramatic boost in overall operational speed.
According to the official release, following this upgrade:
Overall blockchain speed has increased approximately 10x
Block generation frequency is now 6x higher
Transaction confirmation times have been reduced to sub-second levels
Users conducting transfers or operations on the TON network can now experience near-instant transaction confirmations, greatly enhancing the responsiveness of blockchain applications.
The TON team explained that this leap in performance is primarily attributed to the integration of Catchain 2.0 technology. This advancement optimizes consensus and data transmission between nodes, enabling the network to process transactions and generate blocks with greater efficiency.
The official statement noted that, as of April 10, the TON mainnet supports sub-second finality. This means transactions are confirmed and finalized by the network in under one second, dramatically reducing wait times.

TON (The Open Network) serves as the blockchain infrastructure for the Telegram ecosystem, designed to support a range of functions within Telegram, including:
Crypto asset transfers
In-app payments
Decentralized services
Mini App ecosystem
Telegram currently hosts a large and growing number of Mini Apps—compact applications that run directly within the chat interface, such as games, payment tools, and other services.
Slow blockchain confirmation speeds can negatively impact user experience. As a result, TON’s performance improvements are crucial for the continued growth of the Telegram ecosystem.
In blockchain systems, transaction confirmation time directly shapes potential use cases. Previously, if a transaction required around 10 seconds for confirmation, many real-time applications were simply not feasible.
According to TON, the previous confirmation latency hindered experiences such as:
Payments as fast as sending a message
Near-zero latency transactions
Real-time Mini App responses
With this upgrade, TON’s transaction speeds now rival the responsiveness of Web2 applications—a critical advancement for Telegram’s ecosystem of over 1 billion users.
TON also highlighted that this upgrade could have a positive effect on the overall network economy.
With the increased block generation rate:
The network will produce more blocks
Validator nodes will receive increased rewards
More users may be attracted to participate in staking
These factors collectively strengthen both the security and participation rate across the network.
Pavel Durov emphasized that this upgrade is just the first step in TON’s broader development plan, branding the initiative as “Make TON Great Again” (MTONGA). One of the next objectives is to reduce TON’s already low trading fees by another sixfold.
The latest TON blockchain performance upgrade not only boosts network efficiency but also delivers more immediate and seamless infrastructure for a variety of applications within the Telegram ecosystem. With transaction confirmations now at sub-second speeds, digital payments, trade execution, and Mini App interactions are set to feel much closer to traditional web experiences. As TON continues to optimize both transaction costs and network performance, its potential for large-scale blockchain adoption on social platforms remains highly promising.
