The proportion of self-selected crop varieties cultivated in China exceeds 95%.

On April 23, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to brief on the operation of the agricultural and rural economy in the first quarter of 2026 and to answer questions from reporters. Lu Xiutao, head of the Planting Industry Management Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said that agricultural modernization is built on a foundation of seeds. Since the Seed Industry Revitalization Action was launched and implemented in 2021, all work has advanced steadily, the phased goals and tasks have been completed smoothly, and significant progress has been made. At present, the share of areas planted with crop varieties independently bred in China exceeds 95%. The market shares of domestic seed sources for livestock and poultry, aquatic products, and vegetables exceed 80%, 86%, and 91%, respectively. This has enabled the main use of “Chinese grain” with “Chinese seeds,” and the overall controllability of major varieties. From the perspective of germplasm resources, the “family estate” is even more solid. The largest agricultural germplasm resource survey since the founding of the People’s Republic of China has been completed; 139,000 new crop germplasm resources have been newly collected, and three world-class national repositories for crops, livestock and poultry, and marine fisheries have been built, with the total amount of resources preserved ranking first in the world.
