On April 24, Meta announced plans to lay off 10% of its workforce, affecting approximately 8,000 employees. The company aims to enhance operational efficiency through these layoffs to offset substantial expenditures in artificial intelligence (AI). In a memo sent to employees, Meta disclosed that the layoffs will take effect on May 20, and the company will no longer recruit for the 6,000 vacant positions that were originally planned to be filled. Janelle Gale, Meta’s Chief Human Resources Officer, mentioned the AI spending, stating that the layoffs are part of ongoing efforts to improve the company’s operational efficiency and will help offset other investments Meta is currently undertaking.
