Developers criticize Anthropic for secretly modifying the subscription plan, community reputation tilts toward OpenAI
According to Beating Monitoring, Anthropic tested removing the terminal tool Claude Code from the $20 Pro plan on the pricing page, sparking widespread criticism from developers. Many users accused Anthropic of extremely poor communication and “greedy” practices, criticizing this sudden, covert price increase that undermines the tool’s reliability, and many threatened to cancel their subscriptions.
Meanwhile, community reputation is clearly shifting in favor of OpenAI. On one hand, because OpenAI explicitly promised that Codex would retain free and basic subscription tiers; on the other hand, also due to the recent strong performance of its models: the flagship model GPT-5.4 surpassed human expert benchmarks in OSWorld computer tests, and the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.0 also topped the Image Arena leaderboard.
The contrast in business strategies and the solid performance of new models have accelerated user migration. Many developers who originally relied on Claude Code are now switching to Codex, joking that Anthropic is actively helping OpenAI harvest users for free. According to official data released yesterday, Codex’s weekly active users have exceeded 4 million.
