Japan initiates the 19th release of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean
On the morning of the 2nd, Tokyo Electric Power Company began discharging radioactive-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean. This marks the first time the company has discharged radioactive-contaminated water in its 2026 fiscal year (from April 2026 to March 2027), and it is also the 19th overall discharge of radioactive-contaminated water.
According to information released by Tokyo Electric Power Company, at around 11:30 a.m. local time on the 2nd (around 10:30 a.m. Beijing time), the company started this discharge of radioactive-contaminated water. The discharge will continue until April 20. The company plans to discharge a total of about 7,800 tons of radioactive-contaminated water, containing a total of about 1.9 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium.
The materials also show that in the 2026 fiscal year, Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to discharge radioactive-contaminated water 8 times, with a total volume of about 62,400 tons.
In August 2023, Japan, despite strong questioning and opposition from the international community, unilaterally and forcibly launched the discharge of radioactive-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Up to now, a total of 18 discharges have been completed, with a total discharge volume of about 141,000 tons. (Xinhua News Agency)
