How much gold is there in the world? The surprising tally of global gold reserves

Abstract generation in progress

The question of how much gold exists worldwide today can be answered with remarkable accuracy. Thanks to comprehensive data collection by specialized organizations like the World Gold Council, we have a clear overview of our planet’s gold reserves—both the already mined and the still hidden.

Known Gold Reserves: What Has Already Been Mined

Mining has reached an impressive volume by the end of 2024. According to data from the World Gold Council, the leading international authority on gold information, the total above-ground gold mined amounts to 216,265 tons. This includes all gold that humanity has extracted and processed since the beginning of civilization.

To visualize this amount: 216,265 tons would fill a cube approximately 21 meters on each side—similar in volume to a large apartment building. An impressive quantity representing thousands of years of human mining activity.

Hidden Treasures: Subterranean Gold Reserves

But the known above-ground gold is only part of the story. When all explored underground gold reserves are included, additional resource potentials of enormous scale are revealed. The total volume of all known gold deposits—combining already mined gold and explored underground deposits—rises to a total of 348,375 tons.

The difference between these two figures shows the underground potential: about 132,110 tons of gold are still in the earth, waiting to be mined in the future. These reserves have been discovered but are not yet fully exploited technically or economically.

Gold per Person: An Unexpected Perspective

One of the most fascinating perspectives arises when these global gold quantities are distributed across the world population. With approximately 8 billion people on Earth, this results in roughly 23 kilograms of gold per person—if it were evenly divided among all people.

This theoretical value highlights how precious and limited this precious metal truly is. While gold is considered rare and valuable in modern civilization, the reality is even more extreme: each individual has only about 23 kilograms of this substance on our planet. This underscores why gold has been regarded as a valuable asset and store of value for thousands of years.
