Microsoft (MSFT, Financials) is moving to reduce its reliance on OpenAI by accelerating development of its own advanced artificial intelligence models, according to comments from its AI chief Mustafa Suleyman.
After revising its collaboration with OpenAI in October 2025, Suleyman said the corporation is targeting true self sufficiency in AI. Despite investing over $13 billion in OpenAI and owning roughly 27%, Microsoft is constructing frontier foundation models itself.
Microsoft’s Copilot assistant uses OpenAI models. Microsoft keeps intellectual property rights through 2032, including post-AGI systems, while OpenAI receives flexibility to choose new investors and infrastructure partners.
Microsoft is building massive databases and using gigawatts of computer power to train its algorithms, Suleyman added. New in house systems should emerge this year, he said. The business is investing in Anthropic and Mistral to extend its corporate AI footprint.
Microsoft’s fiscal year ends in June, and AI infrastructure will account for $140 billion in capital expenditures. Recent expenditure has generated investor concerns about valuation and AI-related investment excess, sending shares down 13% over the previous month.
Suleyman said the business wants to grab more enterprise demand with powerful AI systems that automate professional jobs while preserving human control of autonomous tools. Investors will scrutinize product launches and financial reports for proof that AI investment boosts sales and margins.
