There's an interesting tech prediction circulating: Microsoft might eventually transition from Windows to a custom Linux distribution within the next 15 years. It's a bold take, but worth examining. The logic goes something like this—as cloud infrastructure and containerization dominate enterprise environments, traditional OS distinctions blur. Linux already powers most servers and is gaining ground in edge computing. For Microsoft, building a Windows-branded Linux distro would let them maintain ecosystem lock-in while tapping into open-source reliability and cost efficiency. We've already seen Microsoft embrace Linux through WSL, Azure's Linux dominance, and GitHub's open-source culture. The shift wouldn't happen overnight, but if the trend continues, the distinction between Windows and Linux could become purely cosmetic. Whether this actually happens depends on how competitive pressures evolve and whether Microsoft's developer base demands it.

Is Microsoft really going to abandon Windows? I think it's unlikely; this guy is overthinking it... However, the move with WSL does quite clearly indicate the direction.

If Microsoft really gives up on Windows, I'll stream myself eating a computer. These 15 years of predictions were way too optimistic, haha.

Nah, Microsoft won't really give up Windows. They say it nicely, but ecosystem lock-in is what they truly care about... WSL and Azure are just smoke screens.

Nah, if Microsoft really switches to Linux, the Windows ecosystem would be doomed... But WSL is indeed a powerful move. Developers have long been accustomed to the Linux environment.

honestly microsoft going full linux would be the most predictable plot twist ever... they're already halfway there with wsl anyway. the real question is whether devs actually care enough to demand it or if we're just watching corporate infrastructure do its thing on its own timeline. either way, ecosystem lock-in wins.

Microsoft's current move, sooner or later, they'll have to bow to Linux. With the combination of WSL and Azure, who can't see it?

Will Windows switch to Linux skins within 15 years? Ha, if Microsoft's move actually happens, it would be outrageous... But to be honest, the WSL setup has been in the works for a while.
