Unity
Originally, there is no Bodhi tree,
Nor is the mirror a stand.
Fundamentally, there is not a single thing,
Where then can dust gather?
Suchness and stillness as the mother,
When a thought moves, conditions arise of themselves.
Emptiness and form are one thing,
Yet everywhere dust is attracted.
The Zen school says: "There is no single thing that is not mind, no single mind that is not thing."
Mind creates things, things can hold mind. In the suchness of the original mind, when mind moves, qi arises; the interaction of two qi forms things and obscures the original mind. Things are but the movement of mind; mind and things are one, not two. Combining the two into one reveals the Zen way.
Those who cling to things are turned by things;
Those who cling to mind are bound by mind.
Where both mind and things are transcended,
Spontaneous freedom manifests.
