Etihad Airways to launch web3 loyalty program with NFTs

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is set to launch an exclusive 300-edition expansion to its EY-ZERO1 non-fungible token (NFT) collection on Aug. 1.

The new release promises a host of benefits for NFT holders, including Etihad Guest Silver Tier Status, priority check-in, lounge access, and the ability to earn miles by staking their assets.

The Polygon-based EY-ZERO1 NFT collection, which first hit the market in July 2022, features 3D aircraft models.

The latest edition is designed to resemble the sleek Boeing 787 Dreamliner featured in the “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” movie.

Previously, the original EY-ZERO1 collection offered exclusive perks such as Etihad Silver Tier status for one year and access to a special NFT holders’ event at the Yas Marina Circuit Formula 1 race.

Now, the new NFT collection significantly expands the range of digital and real-world rewards. Holders will enjoy a 12-month Etihad Guest Silver Tier Status, priority check-in, a 25% boost in earning Etihad Guest Miles, and lounge access at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Looking ahead, in September, Etihad plans to launch its web3 loyalty program called the “Horizon Club,” offering a staking-for-miles program. This program allows the community to lock up their NFTs and earn Etihad Guest Miles, which can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, and other perks.

The new NFTs were developed in partnership with real-world asset tokenization firm Arcube, which serves as Etihad Airways’ official web3 partner. Payments for these NFTs can be made through cryptocurrency or credit card, facilitated by infrastructure firm Crossmint.

While Etihad Airways is actively embracing the opportunities presented by blockchain and NFT technology, it’s essential to note that several European airlines, such as Lufthansa and Eurowings, have also explored web3 integrations and are monitoring its potential applications to their business models.

In June, Japan’s largest airline group, All Nippon Airways (ANA), launched an NFT marketplace to enhance its Web3 strategy. The move includes plans for a metaverse travel experience, integrating passengers’ flight histories into their digital avatars.
