DeepTide TechFlow news: On January 9th, according to a Chainalysis report, due to increased national sanctions, funds received by illegal cryptocurrency addresses reached an all-time high in 2025, totaling $154 billion, representing a year-over-year growth of 162%.
Blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis pointed out in its 2026 Cryptocurrency Crime Report that 2025 saw “unprecedented transaction volumes related to nation-state on-chain behavior.” Sanctioned Russia launched the ruble-backed A7A5 token in February 2025, with trading volume exceeding $93.3 billion in less than a year.
Stablecoins dominated illegal transactions, accounting for 84% of all illegal transaction volumes. Nevertheless, illegal cryptocurrency usage still represents less than 1% of all cryptocurrency transaction volumes, whereas in the traditional financial system, global criminal proceeds average 3.6% of global gross domestic product.
According to the Global Sanctions Inflation Index, as of May 2025, there are nearly 80,000 sanctioned entities and individuals worldwide.
