New unemployment insurance

The number of Americans applying for applications dropped unexpectedly last week, pointing to the persistence of tightness in the US labor market that could influence the Fed's monetary policy decisions.

First unemployment insurance applications, often seen as an indicator of layoffs, September 2

decreased to 216,000 in the week.

The previous week's figure was revised upwards and adjusted to 229,000. Economists had predicted that number would rise to 234,000.

The four-week moving average, which aims to account for volatility in the weekly data, also dropped to 229,250.
