Just found out my dog can actually eat watermelon and honestly I've been doing it wrong the whole time. Apparently it's super safe—like, really good for them in the summer heat since it's mostly water. Dr. Butzer from PetMeds says it's packed with vitamins and low in calories, which is perfect for keeping them hydrated when it's hot outside.
But here's the thing—you absolutely cannot let them eat the seeds or rind. Those can cause serious blockages and digestive issues, which sounds awful. I used to just cut a slice and hand it over, but turns out I should've been removing all that stuff first. For dogs that can eat watermelon safely, you're supposed to cut it into small bite-sized pieces and start with just a few to see how they react.
The other thing is don't go crazy with portions. If you leave them to eat as much watermelon as they want, the sudden fiber and sugar intake can upset their stomach. Dr. Woodnutt mentioned this can lead to diarrhea, which... yeah, no thanks. So basically: yes to watermelon for dogs, but only as an occasional treat, not a daily thing. Also check it's fresh first—no moldy fruit.
