GitHub Copilot tightens from individual to enterprise: Business plan also suspends self-registration
GitHub announced the suspension of self-registration for Copilot Business under the GitHub Free and GitHub Team plans.
Existing Business customers are unaffected and can continue to add seats.
This is the second wave of tightening for Copilot within two days: on April 20, GitHub just paused new registrations for the Personal Pro, Pro+, and Student tiers,
while also suspending all free trials, tightening usage limits, and removing Claude Opus from the Pro plan.
Product Vice President Joe Binder explained the reason for the tightening, stating that the Agentic workflow allows models to automatically start proxy agents and run long tasks in parallel,
with single-session compute consumption far exceeding the plan design, “often costing more than the entire plan price after just a few requests.”
Currently, only the free Copilot Free remains open to new users, and GitHub has not provided a timetable for resuming registrations.
