US Media: Trump Plans to Invite Putin to G20 Summit in Miami

On April 24, according to The Washington Post, U.S. government officials stated on Thursday that the U.S. intends to invite Putin to the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December at the Trump Doral Golf Resort in Miami, although the invitation has not yet been sent. The U.S. State Department, in a statement, indicated that Trump ‘has made it clear that the U.S. is focused on hosting a successful and productive summit and welcomes Russia’s participation in all G20 meetings.’ A senior U.S. government official mentioned to the media, ‘No formal invitation has been issued yet, but Russia, as a member of the G20, will be invited to both the ministerial meetings and the leaders’ summit.’ Since 2019, Russia has not sent representatives to attend in person, initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and later because of the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Putin. Earlier on Thursday, Russian officials stated that Putin had received an invitation to attend the Miami summit, but it remains unclear whether he will attend.
