Just caught up on something pretty wild in the crypto space. Andean Medjedovic, a Canadian hacker, basically vanished again after getting arrested in Serbia. This guy's been all over the place—Brazil, Dubai, Spain, Netherlands—and he's allegedly behind some massive heists.
Here's what went down: Medjedovic is suspected of stealing around $65 million in crypto across multiple attacks. The most notable one was hitting KyberSwap back in late 2023, where he walked away with $48 million using some seriously sophisticated hacking techniques. The guy used a fake passport from a hotel in the Netherlands to pull it off, which honestly shows how calculated these operations can be.
What's even crazier is that Andean Medjedovic got arrested in Belgrade last year and spent over 100 days in custody, but then got released. And now he's apparently disappeared again. DOJ documents suggest he might have fled to Bosnia, but nobody's really sure at this point.
The U.S. Department of Justice has been tracking him for using Tornado Cash to launder the stolen funds and coordinating with accomplices to move the money around. This whole situation is a pretty stark reminder of how real the security risks are in DeFi, especially when you're dealing with high-value protocols. Medjedovic's case shows that even with international law enforcement involved, some of these actors manage to stay steps ahead.
Anyone else following this? The fact that Andean Medjedovic is still out there is honestly concerning for the whole ecosystem. Makes you think about how much work still needs to be done on security protocols and international cooperation.
