BlockBeats News, April 23 — Last week, the number of Americans filing for initial unemployment benefits increased, but the current level of applications still aligns with low layoffs. According to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday, initial claims for unemployment benefits in the week ending April 18 rose by 6,000 to 214k, with a market forecast median of 210k. This period coincides with the timeframe referenced in the government’s April employment report. Continuing claims increased to 1.82 million.

Initial claims remain near their lowest levels since last year, consistent with other recent data indicating that the labor market is stabilizing. A late March survey found that about half of American workers are worried about losing their jobs, but unemployment benefit application data has not yet reflected a significant increase in layoffs.
