Pakistan raises fuel prices by nearly 50%

Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced at a press conference that the country will raise the gasoline price by 43%, to 458.4 rupees per liter; diesel prices will be increased by 55%, to 520.35 rupees per liter. Malik said Pakistan will also shift from comprehensive fuel subsidies to more targeted subsidy measures. The finance minister, Muhammad Olangzeb, said Pakistan will provide subsidies to motorcycles, transport vehicles, and the railway sector. Note: Previously, Pakistan maintained fuel prices for three weeks by issuing subsidies of 129 billion rupees (about $462 million).
