I recently saw something interesting on Arkham Intelligence. It turns out that Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, has been moving a lot of ETH over the past few weeks. He sold around 17.196 ETH between January and early February, which amounts to about 30 million dollars. This isn't the first time he's done this, but it's always worth paying attention to these movements.

The interesting part is that this isn't an random dump. Ethereum's creator has been quite transparent about his intentions. According to on-chain data, part of these funds were allocated to the Ethereum Foundation during what Buterin called a period of "moderate austerity." Additionally, he sent exactly 500,000 USDC to Kanro, his biotech organization, after executing the transaction through CoW Protocol with Wintermute.

If you look at Buterin's history, this is a fairly consistent pattern. In January 2025, he had already sold meme tokens worth 2.5 million, also directed to Kanro. Years earlier, in 2021, he donated 1.2 billion in SHIB to aid COVID relief in India. So when you see the Ethereum creator selling during bearish periods, there's usually more behind it than speculation.

In terms of his holdings, Buterin went from having over 240,000 ETH at the beginning of 2026 to around 224,000 after these sales. That's approximately a 7% reduction. Although it sounds like a lot, remember that in 2015 he had close to 663,000 ETH. So his holdings have decreased by more than 60% since then, but that reflects his commitment to philanthropy more than anything else.

He still currently holds about 450 million in ETH and AETHWETH, distributed between direct holdings and positions in Aave. The message seems clear: Ethereum's creator prioritizes the development and sustainability of the protocol, as well as his charitable initiatives, over accumulating personal wealth. It's the kind of move that provides context about the real priorities in the ecosystem.
