Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific (AS), Admiral Samuel John Paparo Jr., acknowledges that Bitcoin is not just a cryptocurrency but a technology with the potential to become a digital weapon in the global power map.

During a hearing before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, the four-star Navy general highlighted how Bitcoin can be utilized as a strategic instrument, especially amid geopolitical competition with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

“Bitcoin is already a reality, operating through a peer-to-peer system without third parties, and capable of supporting various elements of America's national power comprehensively,” said Paparo.

He explained that military research focus is not on Bitcoin's market value but on its technological foundations such as cryptography, blockchain, and proof-of-work mechanisms, which are considered to have strategic impacts.

“The technology behind Bitcoin shows extraordinary potential as a computer science tool, and can even be used for power projection, including cybersecurity,” he added.
