So if you're getting SASSA grants and need to update your account number or banking details, here's what you actually need to know because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
For permanent grants like old age or disability, you can't just do this online unfortunately. You have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. They'll need your SA ID and proof of your new bank account - basically a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank confirming the account is in your name. Important thing: SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name, so make sure the account is only yours.
Once you submit your sassa account number change request at the office, it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. And here's the catch - if you want it to work for next month's payment, you need to get it done before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
Now if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 relief thing), it's way easier because you can do the whole sassa account number change online. Just go to the official SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure SMS link. Click it, put in your new bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification though.
For your phone number, same deal - permanent grants need an office visit or you can call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. But SRD lets you update your contact details on their portal too. They'll text you an OTP to verify it's actually your new number.
Real talk: make sure you're using the official SASSA website or going to an actual office. There's a bunch of fake sites out there trying to scam people, especially with the SRD changes. Stick to the real channels and you'll be fine.
