Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their banking details with SASSA, especially with the December payments coming up. Thought I'd break it down since I went through this recently.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. Bring your ID (original and copy) plus a recent bank statement or letter from your bank showing the account is active in your name. They won't pay into joint accounts or anything, has to be yours alone. The whole verification takes up to 21 working days, so if you need it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th. Miss that deadline and you wait another cycle.
For the SRD R350 grant though, it's different - you can update banking details online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, then you input your new bank details. Takes a few days to weeks for verification, but way easier than going to an office.
Phone number updates work similarly depending on your grant type. Permanent grants need an office visit or a call to the helpline (0800 60 10 11), but SRD has an online contact portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, and they send you an OTP to verify. Just make sure you use the official SASSA website - there's apparently a lot of fake sites out there trying to scam people.
The key thing is don't delay on this. Keep your contact and payment details current or you'll miss payments. Anyone else had issues updating their details?
