Just realized a lot of people are still struggling with updating their SASSA details, especially when it comes to changing banking information. So here's what I figured out after dealing with this myself.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you pretty much have to go to the SASSA office in person - can't do it online, which honestly is a pain. You'll need your ID, a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months), and you'll fill out their Payment Method Change Form. The whole verification thing takes up to 21 working days, and if you're late submitting before the 15th, you're stuck waiting another month for the change to kick in.
Now, if you're getting the SRD R370 grant, that's actually different - the whole process is online through their portal, which is way easier. You just enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your banking details for the SRD grant right there. No office visit needed, but it still takes a few days to weeks for the bank verification.
One thing that caught me off guard: they won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name. Has to be purely yours. Also, watch out for fake websites trying to get you to update your phone number - stick to the official SASSA SRD portal only.
If the online thing isn't working (which happens sometimes), just call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or go to your local office. Not the fastest, but it's the safest way to sort it out. Anyone else had issues updating their account details?
