just found out some authors are literally billionaires lol. like JK Rowling has a net worth of $1 billion—she's apparently the first author ever to hit that mark. wild considering it's all from Harry Potter books and the media empire around it. 600 million copies sold across 84 languages? that's insane.
anyway the list goes deep. Grant Cardone is supposedly the richest at $1.6 billion but he's more of a business guy who writes books rather than a pure author imo. then you've got James Patterson at $800 million—dude has written like 140+ novels and sold 425 million copies. Jim Davis with Garfield made $800 million too just from a comic strip that's been running since 1978.
Danielle Steel's at $600 million from romance novels, Matt Groening created The Simpsons and sits at $600 million. Stephen King is $500 million—the horror guy who's sold 350 million books. Paulo Coelho with The Alchemist is also $500 million. then John Grisham rounds out the top 10 at $400 million from legal thrillers.
the crazy part? some of these people make $50-80 million per year just from royalties and advances. so JK Rowling's net worth keeps growing probably. makes you think about how much money is in publishing if you actually blow up. not that most of us will write the next Harry Potter lol
