Just realized - if you're planning to trade next Memorial Day, the stock market open hours won't apply that day. NYSE, Nasdaq, all the major exchanges basically shut down completely for the holiday. It's on the last Monday of May, so heads up if you've got positions you're watching.

Turns out this goes way back. After the Civil War, people started calling it Decoration Day to honor soldiers. Didn't become 'Memorial Day' officially until the 1970s when they moved it to create a long weekend. So yeah, the stock market open situation is tied to federal holiday rules - when markets close, they close for everyone.

Bond markets are down too, by the way. Treasury, corporate bonds, all of it. SIFMA follows the same schedule. So if you're hedging or trading bonds, stock market open or not doesn't matter that day.

Most people use it to remember fallen military, visit memorials, or just kick off summer mode. There's this 3 PM moment of silence thing. Honestly, it's a good reminder that the stock market being closed is about something bigger than trading. Pretty solid reason to take the day.
