China has launched a national action plan to incorporate artificial intelligence into the education system. This was reported by SCMP.

The initiative is related to the desire to ensure a competitive workforce in the future amid escalating global competition in advanced technologies.

The AI + Education plan was introduced by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with four other agencies. It envisions integrating AI at all stages of learning — from primary school to lifelong professional training.

The initiative was launched as part of China’s long-term education development plan until 2035, published last January. The document named artificial intelligence as a key driver of reforming the education system to meet the needs of the digital economy and future industries.

The authors of the document characterized it as a direct response to fierce global competition, in which major economies like the US, the EU, and Singapore have launched programs to increase investments in education and training in AI.

“Redefining the skills needed for the modern era, AI compels a systematic and fundamental overhaul of education,” — authorities emphasized.

The central part of the plan is the creation of a nationwide infrastructure. Instead of relying on fragmented local projects, the government will unify computing platforms and data networks into a single service. This centralized approach aims to ensure efficiency.

Three Stages

The plan outlines a multi-level strategy for integrating AI across all areas of education:

  • at the basic level, schools should offer lessons aimed at developing curiosity and problem-solving skills;
  • universities will introduce basic AI courses to stimulate interdisciplinary innovation;
  • professional and continuous education programs will focus on “intellectual transformation” of traditional roles and provide broad access to AI learning opportunities.

To support the transition, Beijing intends to reform the teacher training system by including AI knowledge in certification and licensing requirements.

Funding for the plan will come from the central budget.

Recall that in 2024, the use of artificial intelligence in the education sector in the US increased significantly.
