📰 Bitcoin Core Developer: Instead of letting 5.6 million BTC be cracked by quantum computers, it’s better to freeze them

BlockBeats news, April 16 — Bitcoin core developer Jameson Lopp recently said that rather than letting quantum computing attackers steal those long-dormant bitcoins in the future, it’s better to freeze them. About 5.6 million BTC (around 28% of the total supply) have not moved for more than 10 years and are likely permanently lost, worth approximately $420 billion. If these dormant coins are cracked by quantum computers and enter the market, it could trigger intense volatility and market panic, and even damage confidence in the Bitcoin network. Lopp stressed that this isn’t an outcome he wants to see; it’s merely a stopgap to counter potential existential threats—he would rather make these “lost” coins unusable by attackers.
Damn, bro, are these core developers just bored out of their minds? They spend every day thinking about cracking 5.6 million BTC with quantum computers—why don’t you think about what to have for breakfast tomorrow? $BTC have all been lying dormant for ten years. If they really could be cracked, the entire crypto world would have collapsed long ago! Freeze them? Freeze my fist—without private keys, you’re just freezing air! With all that time, you might as well figure out how to bring down Layer2 gas fees! Purely manufacturing panic, giving shady market makers an excuse to shake out retail investors, right? 👇👇👇👇👇
