Just looked at the GDP per capita figures for the poorest countries in the world in 2025... honestly, it’s mind-blowing. South Sudan at the top with only $251 per person, that’s crazy. Then you have Yemen at $417, Burundi at $490. And when you go down the list, you see that the majority of the 50 poorest countries in Africa are really dominated by sub-Saharan Africa.
What struck me is how the gaps are widening. Even the slightly better-ranked countries remain disastrous: the DRC at $743, Niger at $751, Somalia at $766. And then you have countries like Nigeria with $807, Liberia at $908. When you look at the 50 poorest countries overall, you also find Myanmar at $1,177, Nepal at $1,458, but clearly Africa accounts for most of the critical situations.
The lowest part of this list is really heavy. Haiti at $2,672, Bangladesh at $2,689, Cambodia at $2,870. It puts things into perspective when you see these figures side by side. We’re talking about economies where people live with practically nothing.
