CoinWorld News reports that Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption is a “massive consumer fraud.” He noted that about 95% of private messages are ultimately stored in unencrypted backups on Apple and Google servers. Durov believes this leaves users’ privacy security at risk, even though WhatsApp claims its message transmission uses end-to-end encryption, since the actual backup mechanism does not ensure full encryption of users’ information. The remarks have prompted industry attention on privacy-protection measures for mainstream messaging apps.
