Meta will allow rival AI to access WhatsApp to avoid EU intervention
Reuters reported on March 5 that Meta (META.US) said it will allow competitors’ AI chatbots to connect to its platform via the WhatsApp Business API within the next 12 months, under a paid model. The move is intended to respond to European Union antitrust regulatory pressure and avoid temporary intervention measures.
Previously, last month the European Commission threatened to take temporary measures to prevent “serious and irreversible” competitive harm caused by Meta opening WhatsApp only to its own Meta AI as of January 15. This development is consistent with steps taken by Italy’s regulators in December last year.
A Meta spokesperson said: ‘This move is a response to the EU regulatory process. We believe it can remove the need for immediate intervention and give the Commission time to complete its comprehensive investigation.’
Currently, Brussels is assessing how this adjustment by Meta will affect the review of temporary measures and the overall antitrust investigation.
