According to a report by the Myanmar Radio and Television 18, at the first session of the Third Myanmar Ethnic Assembly (Upper House) held in the capital Naypyidaw that day, former Secretary of the State Administration Council Lin Htein was elected as the new Speaker of the Ethnic Assembly. At the first session of the Third Myanmar House of Representatives (Lower House) held in Naypyidaw on the 16th, Kyin Yi, Chairman of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was elected as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives. Myanmar’s general election is divided into three voting stages: the first stage voting was held on December 28, 2025 across 102 townships; the second stage took place on January 11 of this year across 100 townships; and the third stage was held on January 25 across 61 townships. According to data released on January 29 by Myanmar’s Union Election Commission, the USDP won a majority of seats in the Union Parliament (including military non-elected seats). The Union Parliament of Myanmar consists of the House of Representatives and the Ethnic Assembly, with a total of 664 seats (including military non-elected seats): 440 seats in the House of Representatives and 224 seats in the Ethnic Assembly. The new Union Parliament will nominate a new president, who will form the federal government. (Xinhua)
