(MENAFN) A commercial tanker sustained damage after being struck by two projectiles roughly 17 nautical miles north of Doha, according to updates issued by the UK Maritime Trade Operations early Wednesday.

As stated by reports, the impact caused structural damage to the ship’s hull above the waterline. In a follow-up notice, it was indicated that one of the projectiles ignited a fire onboard, which has since been brought under control. The second projectile did not detonate and remains lodged within the vessel’s engine room, where it is currently being assessed by relevant authorities.

According to reports, no injuries were recorded, while investigations are ongoing to determine the type of munitions used and the circumstances behind the attack.

The agency has urged ships navigating nearby waters to remain vigilant and promptly report any unusual or suspicious activity.

This incident comes against the backdrop of rising tensions in the region, where the United States and Israel have been conducting air operations against Iran since late February, resulting in over 1,340 reported fatalities, according to Iranian officials.
