US Federal Communications Commission Bans Imports of All Foreign-Manufactured Consumer-Grade Routers
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States stated in a release that all foreign-made consumer routers are banned from importation because such routers are deemed to pose an “unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the safety and security of U.S. personnel.” The FCC said that the decision includes exemptions, and routers that have been “conditionally approved” after assessments by the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security, indicating they do not pose the aforementioned unacceptable risks, are not subject to restrictions. The FCC also stated, “This measure will not affect consumers’ continued use of previously obtained routers, nor will it prevent retailers from continuing to sell, import, or promote router models previously approved through the FCC equipment authorization process. Under the enforcement of the FCC’s coverage list rules, the restrictions implemented today apply to new device models.” (First Financial)
