On March 23, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran announced that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had a phone call with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The two emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate the situation in the Persian Gulf and to engage in diplomatic mediation. The statement said that Sharif stated he discussed the serious situation in the Persian Gulf region with Raisi, and both agreed on the urgent need to ease tensions, engage in dialogue, and pursue diplomatic efforts. He also stressed the importance of unity within the Islamic world and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive role in promoting regional peace. Previously, there were reports that Israeli officials said several countries are trying to coordinate a meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan, involving Iran’s Islamic Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, U.S. President Trump’s envoy David Wittekov, Jared Kushner, and Vice President Kamala Harris, possibly later this week.
