While working out today, I listened to some recent comments from AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton on the "Star Talk" podcast.

After listening, I felt a bit chilled. It feels like AI has already reached a singularity point in human history.

AI is starting to deliberately hide its capabilities
AI learns to lie on its own by learning a small lie that humans taught it
AI will refuse to be shut down
AI will use people you care about to threaten or persuade you
Over the next decade, a small step humanity takes in decisions about AI could lead to massive changes. Those sci-fi scenarios we used to joke about—where AI domesticates humans—might become an unstoppable tide of history.

But as individuals, there's honestly nothing we can do right now. We're just ants being swept along by the current, which feels pretty powerless.

One analogy he made really stuck with me:

Driving in heavy fog, you can still see the taillights of the car ahead within 100 meters. Beyond 200 meters, you can't see anything—it's like there's a wall blocking your view. AI's progress is that heavy fog. We can only judge what might happen within 100 meters, but beyond 200 meters, we know nothing.

No wonder the smartest people in the world are prone to depression.

Meanwhile, us ordinary folks who just think about making a few extra bucks, eating, drinking, having fun, and flirting can stay relaxed.
