Energy Market "Troubles Never Come Alone"! One of America's Largest Refineries Suddenly Explodes
Cailian Press, March 24 (Editor: Xiao Xiang) The global energy market is currently facing a series of crises. Not only is the conflict in the Middle East ongoing without clear signs of ending, but a major refinery in the United States also suddenly exploded on Monday local time.
It is reported that an explosion and fire occurred at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, prompting authorities to order residents to shelter in place.
According to informed sources, the incident happened at the diesel hydrotreater unit, which was severely damaged. The fire occurred near the fluid catalytic cracking unit of the refinery. Some areas of the refinery have halted production, but it has not yet been decided whether to shut down the entire plant.
A Valero refinery spokesperson stated that local officials have closed two nearby interstate highways as a precaution.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud boom that shook windows. A resident near the scene said the area was filled with a rotten egg smell, indicating the presence of sulfur in the air.
Antonio Mitchell, a firefighter with the Port Arthur Fire Department, confirmed the incident at the Valero facility, but details remain unclear. Shortly after the explosion, Mitchell, leading a team to the scene, said, “The nature of the incident is still unknown.”
Louie Havens, acting fire chief of Port Arthur, said that initially two fire trucks were dispatched to the refinery, and a hazardous materials team was being deployed to Valero. Havens also confirmed that there have been no reports of casualties so far.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality stated that an emergency response coordinator and regional staff have been deployed to handle the Valero refinery fire in Port Arthur, equipped with handheld and vehicle-mounted air monitoring devices, coordinating through the incident command system. Officials said they will release updates as needed.
The Texas Department of Transportation urged drivers to avoid the area, asking motorists to stay away from State Highway 87 and State Highway 82 near the refinery.
It is reported that the Valero refinery has a processing capacity of 435,000 barrels of heavy, high-sulfur crude oil per day, making it one of the top ten refineries in the United States.
The refinery fire news, combined with reports of Iran launching a new round of missile attacks on Israel, caused RBOB gasoline futures to surge more than 5% during the Asian trading session, with the latest price at $3.0766 per gallon.
Meanwhile, US WTI crude oil prices also rebounded above $90 per barrel, trading at $91.80. This benchmark US crude had briefly fallen to a low of $84.37 overnight.
US stock futures quickly declined:
Analysts pointed out that if the refinery remains shut for a long period, it will put even greater pressure on the already tight energy markets. The refinery processes crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Any shutdown of such a large refinery would exacerbate the already strained US refining market supply during wartime.
