Iran War Causes Aviation Fuel Shortage; Philippines May Cancel Flights

Philippine President Marcos stated that flight cancellations are “a very real possibility” due to aviation fuel shortages caused by the Iran conflict.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, Marcos said, “Several countries have told our airlines that they cannot refuel their planes, so aircraft must carry enough fuel for their round trips. Long-haul flights will face more serious issues.” When asked if planes might ultimately be forced to cease operations, Marcos replied, “We hope that won’t happen, but it is indeed a possibility.”

As the Middle East conflict escalates, airlines across Asia are developing contingency plans. Since the Philippines heavily relies on imported crude oil—most of which comes from the Middle East—the country is more vulnerable to energy shortages and domestic fuel price surges compared to other Southeast Asian nations. Cebu Pacific, a Philippine low-cost carrier, announced on Monday that due to the spike in fuel prices caused by the Middle East crisis, it plans to reduce flights starting next month.
