Tesla faces escalated safety probe over ‘full-self driving’

US auto safety regulators have escalated their investigation into Tesla’s “Full-Self Driving” system, citing additional crashes related to the technology’s ability to handle reduced visibility conditions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) upgraded its probe to an engineering analysis after reviewing incidents where the system failed to detect and warn drivers about degraded camera visibility. This increased scrutiny could lead to a recall and impacts Tesla’s future autonomous driving ambitions, as nine crashes are now linked to the automated system, up from four.
