Local Administration Minister Urges Municipal Readiness Ahead Upcoming Depression

Amman, March 23 (Petra)-- Minister of Local Administration, Walid Al-Masri, has directed municipalities, joint services councils, and municipal affairs directorates across the Kingdom to raise their readiness levels in anticipation of unstable weather conditions and a forecasted low-pressure system expected on Wednesday and Thursday.
The minister stressed the importance of inspecting culverts, stormwater drainage systems, and valley channels, particularly in the aftermath of the previous weather system.
He underscored the need to take precautionary measures tailored to each area, including widening valley channels to ensure smooth water flow and reinforcing infrastructure by installing concrete barriers, sand bags, and earthen dams. He also called for mobilizing all available resources to safeguard lives and property.
Al-Masri highlighted the necessity of activating emergency operations rooms throughout the duration of the weather system and maintaining coordination with relevant authorities to ensure rapid response to any incidents. He urged citizens to exercise maximum caution, avoid flood-prone areas, valleys, and low-lying regions, and prioritize their safety.
The minister also extended Eid Al-Fitr greetings to heads of municipal committees, joint services councils, municipal directors, and all administrative and field staff, commending their continued efforts in serving the nation and citizens during the holiday period and the coinciding weather conditions.
According to early warning systems and meteorological forecasts distributed to municipalities, scattered rainfall is expected to begin on Wednesday morning across various regions of the Kingdom.
By the afternoon and evening, the impact of the low-pressure system is expected to intensify, with heavier rainfall, thunderstorms, and occasional hail, with a “moderate” risk level across most areas.
Risk levels are expected to rise in low-lying areas of the Jordan Valley, as well as in the governorates of Irbid, Ajloun, and Balqa. The city of Aqaba may also experience moderate risk conditions later in the day.
Rainfall is forecast to continue intermittently from Wednesday night into Thursday, with risk levels ranging from “low to moderate.” A specific warning has been issued for the Disi area in Aqaba Governorate, where heavy rainfall is possible.
